 "Don't do it!" 2010-07-19
By Susan Fisher (Lake Poinsett, SD)
We're a Sony family. And recently we bought this newer cybershot...NOT as a replacement, but we wanted the two new features: the 14.1 MP and the 180-landscape.We're disappointed.

1) On Amazon, the camera listed the lens as CARL ZEISS...IT IS NOT...I went to the Sony website, found out the real facts, wrote Amazon, they updated the listing...and lss: the lens just is not the par of Zeiss...I know, I know, Sony says they did this, to me anyway, because it is equal quality...and maybe they'll say Zeiss makes it...but it's just not as crisp as our 10.1 or 12 cybershots with the Zeiss.

2) The cameras focusing is slippery...whether I use auto focus and no matter how we set it up, there is NOT consistency in same shots as far as how the shots are focused. Further, the lens makes a lot of noise trying to focus. Also, when videoing (forgetaboutit) much too much of my videos are blurry...again, the camera cannot focus. yes, even using the image stabilization we still get blurry shots or focus that is not on target (relying on the focus feature where the grid does show up on the LCD).

3) The noise mentioned in #2...There is a slight, but discernable eletronic grinding noise...Sony via phone service was concerned...'this should not occur' so I sent it in for service...I was called, SONY IS GREAT when it comes to service, and they said, 'this is normal'...so there you have it. I have a normally 'louder than no-sound' cybershot that doesn't focus well and makes a ton of noise.

4) Inconsistent...of course #1 and #2 makes for inconsistent shots, BUT that's just plain irritating and disappointing...and it's NOT what Sony's known for ----so we're primarilly keeping with our older Sonys and only use this for the landscape mode, however NOTE...

5) The landscape mode, which is very, very awesome in concept is just not implemented well yet. I'd not buy until maybe next or 3rd generation. The camera allows you to set your 180 swing to go from left-to-right, up-to-down or visa versa of either of these. GREAT concept...Further, the camera's smarts tell you when you're not doing the swing smoothly enough, per se, or perhaps you moved too much off the center and it will tell you, essentially it isn't taking the shot, and you can retry. Okay, sounds good. BUT there are times when I've taken the picture and the shot is broken into slices and so the photo is a long landscape, but with blank spots between portions of the whole image. This does not happen every time, but too many times and frankly, not what the camera should be doing. So again, "DON'T DO IT...don't buy this version!"

We paid full retail from an Amazon dealer ($250)...and bummer, it's been serviced once, we were told there's nothing out of the norm' with our camera...and so, we have what Sony knows they produced...a bit sub-standard...and we're knowing it was more or less a loss of money.

We say at this point if you really want to buy a Cybershot: DON'T buy this one. Get one with Carl Zeiss lens, and for now, stick to the old fashion way of making a huge landscape...many shots, and cut and paste in your choice of photo management tool! And btw, our 2nd choice is the Olmypus Stylus 550(water resistant if you have kids it's a real smart camera to own for all the shots from sprinklers and tubs to oceans, fishing, rain play etc.)

 "Best 200 bucks I've spent" 2010-07-18
By Jeffrey Bregg (Budd Lake, nj)
I looked at the reviews before I bought the camera (I always do before I buy anything). The reviewers gave it a high rating and I whole heartedly agree. It takes great pictures and the zoom (10x) is really fantastic. I have used the zoom to take a picture of a truck that I couldn't read the writing on. The built-in flash is great. The 3" screen let me read what was on the truck with ease. The panarama feature is really great. I took a picture of my yard from one side to the other by just standing in one spot in front of my house and turning. The movie setting is also great. I used it film my yard and gave audible discription of what I was looking at. And I could zoom in while shooting the movie. Other reviewers mentioned noise when using the zoom when shooting movies but my camera didn't make any noise that I noticied. Hope it stays that way. You have to buy a memory stick separetly. I bought an 8gb stick (by Lexar) and it works fine. You can take movies that are just under 2 hrs. to over 5 hrs. depending on the picture size (you set the pic. size from the menu). Remember that like everything else today, the manual you get with it is small and you need to download the disk that comes with the camera to get the full manual you can then read on the computer. The computer maual is really excellent. Everyone I showed the pics to (on the LCD screen) were extremly impressed. Best money I've spent in long time!! It only weighs 7.1 oz. w/ battery. I do recommend buying an extra battery and case (it doesn't come with a case).

Have had the camera for a few days, and so far, works wonderfully. Despite what others say, the image is captured quite quickly for most shots.

 "outstanding" 2010-07-31

Product arrived promptly despite not paying for "expedited shipping" was looking for a small portable camwera to take to hawaii. this puppy does it all. 8gb card holds nearly a thousand pictures, and the camera does videos up to 45 minutees long!!! was on a cruise for a week and had room to spare. 5x optical zoom allows me to frame picture as I see fit. And it slips into my cargo pocket. I feel sorry for people with those those cameras with a long lenses that look like a boat anchor.

 "S570 not a step forward" 2010-07-26
By S. B. Snyder (Wellington, FL)
Taking Office Depot up on their recent "Trade-In and Trade-Up" promotion, I traded in my almost 2 year old 8 mp Nikon L18. The former camera had the distinction of taking good photographs but not ever being recognized by my computer using the input cord; I would have to transfer pics by swapping the memory card in another brand of camera I owned (I also own a Nikon D40 SLR and this is not a problem so I don't believe that this is a problem unique to the Nikon brand).

Anyways, in regards to the S570, this is a very nicely packaged and very small (and light) sophisticated point-and-shoot digital camera. Like many of the new slim generation of digitals, this camera requires you to charge up it's lithium battery to get the camera to operate. Charging time is excessively long taking several hours.

Strangely, the LCD viewing area is 2.7" which might be the new standard but is smaller than the 3" area of the L series Nikon has discontinued.

Picture quality is not a visible improvement over either of my 8 mp cameras and certainly not as good as the 6 mp (but larger sensor area) D40. Facial recognition is hit-or-miss, that is, sometimes it works and others not at all.

Most disappointing, however is the fact that this camera was only able to transfer photographs the very first time it was attached (via cord) to my computer. Subsequent attempts did not succeed and I was forced to transfer the memory card to another camera (just like the previous Nikon L18!). Apparently, the connection at the camera has been a problem for other owners of this model.

I am no longer impressed with the Nikon line of small pocket digital cameras and will most likely exchange the 5570 for a Sony, Kodak or Canon model.

 "A litle disappointed." 2010-07-25
By Kimberli1004
I bought this because I have another nikon that I love! I loved the size and convenience. It takes really nice and clear pictures but still lacked on some areas. I hate the zoom and the digital zoom is terrible! After I got it, I read a few reviews that said they hated the camera because of the lens problems and I no more read that and used my camera for the second time and got a lens error. Not once but twice in the second time I used the camera. Sadly I wouldn't recconmend this to anyone. Nice price for a 12 megapixel but I think they cut corners on the rest of the quality.

"It meets NIKONS REPUTATION for the price and quality" 2010-07-23
By John Bean (San Diego, CA)
I am very pleased with this camera so far. It seems to have the 2 qualities that make Nikon different than other cameras.

1. It seems to have a fairly good quality glass lens. (keep in mind this is only a $129 camera)

2. It has a very good logical system for taking pictures that is very easy to learn and has all its features arranged very well. Nikon has always been superior in its design of features for ease of use and only putting in logical features for taking the best pictures. Many other cameras over the years would put in features as selling points but many had little to do with taking good pictures. When I got this camera it took me about 20 minutes to find every feature without looking at any of the documents that came with it. Better yet, everything was arranged logically and easy to find. This is what sold me on Nikon 30 years ago when I bought my first Nikon SLR. Mind you, this is an inexpensive pocket camera but it has more features than I expected.

For those that give it a low rating for picture quality I suggest that they spend some time reading the user manual. Practice using the 17 preset scenes by pressing the green scene button. Also, small pocket cameras are more sensitive to steady in low light or zoomed. If you are in low light or zoomed in you might want to use a mono-pod or rest against something firm. Better yet, change the setting. If your camera was defective when you got it or soon after this is not the place to take out your frustration. Send it back and get a working one before you write your review, it's guaranteed. Reviews are for working items.

I give it high marks for a pocket camera in its price range. I especially like the wide angle and the zooming range. 28MM-140MM gives you a lot of range.
