"No IR sensor for remote" 2010-11-01
By D. Maloney
I own a D40 and love it for what it is. Since the D40 is no longer sold I bought this as the equivalent model as a gift. For some crazy reason Nikon didn't include the IR sensor so you cant use the $10 wireless remote that is incredibly handy.

"Loads of Features at a Value Price" 2010-10-27
By Irv Haas (Indianapolis, IN USA)
As a previous owner of a Nikon D3000, the predecessor to the D3100, I was impressed not only by the features, but also by the price of this new camera.

When the D3000 was new, its MSRP was $599. The replacement model, one year later was $699 only $100 more. What do you get for that extra $100? Check out just some of the features:

1) An improved resolution of 14.2 MP compared with the 10.2 MP of the previous model

2) HD video (1080p), not previously available at this price point

2) EXPEED 2 which is Nikon's new image processing engine

All of these new features were added while Nikon kept the size and weight comparable to the previous model (the D3100 is 1/2 oz. heavier!)

This camera is so loaded I can't think of any negatives except price--if that is an issue go buy a point-and-shoot model!

Overall, Nikon has truly outdone itself with the D3100. For someone starting out in photography or a camera veteran, I can't think of a better more versatile choice than this one.

 "D3100 a great choice !" 2010-10-25
By J. Larson (Rhinelander, Wi. United States)
For over five years I have been using a Nikon D50 which I felt was an exceptional digital camera. However, with advancements such as live view, increased mega pixels, 1080 movies, more ISO settings, etc I decided to purchase the Nikon D3100. I normally would not buy a camera without handling it to see if it felt comfortable but decided to take a chance as the D3100 was so new and about the only way I could get one was through Amazon. I was not disappointed. It is lighter but feels as comfortable as the D50 even with other zoom lenses attached. I haven't taken a ton of pictures or movies yet but I will state so far I am very pleased. Navigation through the various menus is even more convenient than the D50. While I consider myself quite knowledgeable the guides are handy and for someone new to digital photography the D3100 is very user friendly and teaches you the basics. Very innovative!I highly recommend this camera. I do note that battery life is not quite as long as the D50. Movies, quite naturally, use up more battery life. Suggest one gets a spare. Also, Nikon does not supply the USB Cable UC-E4 to connect the camera to a computer or printer nor do they supply the Audio Video cable EG-D2 to connect the camera to a TV. Also make sure you get a class 6 memory card so movies and live view operate efficiently.

 "Nikon has stepped up!" 2010-10-23
By Nathan Frisby
I have been a hobby photographer for over 40 years. My 1st Nikon was a 6MP Coolpix that I still have and love to use. My brother bought a D5000 back in the spring and I had taken some great shots with it on my first try but found the price a little more than I wanted to spend. So I had read that this D3100 was coming out soon and I waited to see reviews. This SLR is everything and more that it was reported to be. In less than 10 minutes I was able to take vibrant color, detailed photos , with ease. I used only the 18-55mm VR lens that comes with the VR KIT-BE SURE YOU ARE GETTING THE VR. While I think it would be nice if the computer cable was included it wasn't a factor since I just plug the SDHC card into my card reader and download my pictures, JPEG files and used Picture It to preview.

The camera is so light weight, shutter speed is excellent and can rapid fire in those action shots that you want. I want to add a telephoto and a macro lens to my case and maybe a few filters but I feel that this camera will be by my side for many years. It's the kind of camera that walks you into the learning process of using a digital SLR that many getting their 1st SLR will appreciate very much as the Manual or your on screen help will show you all that is needed. I would say that for the money there is no way to go wrong with the purchase of the new Nikon D3100, simple and fast as full auto point & shoot SLRor switch to manual and start creating those special shots you did with your old 35mm film camera.

 "Nikon D3100 First DSLR" 2010-10-23
By glandpuck (Carolina)
My daughter has been using a Nikon D90 for the past 2 years and the camera has been nothing short of rock solid. I was using a 4 year old 7MP point and shoot that became so slow I could not stand to use it anymore. However, I also was in need of a camera to take high def video for our family use. The D3100 fit the bill for me. First, it was purchased from a retailer on sale at a price point I could afford with the features an amateur looks for. The lenses on my daughter's D90 also fit this camera so that expanded the value. I was able to get through the manuals fairly quickly and began taking photos and experimenting with the different modes. I did not find it overwhelming for a beginner. Now, after purchase, I found I had to purchase a memory card, so I bought a Sandisk Extreme III 30 mb/sec card (SDHC, class 10) that is rated for 1080P video that this camera shoots. The card formatted and worked flawlessly there is a lifetime warranty on the card. I am using a 32GB card. I downloaded the NXView2 software to my windows 7 64 bit computer and connected to the camera without difficulty using a min-usb to usb cable that is not included (I had one laying around). I could edit and store my photos and movies without problems in this environment. I did find that Photoshop CS5 does not yet support the raw format of this camera, just the jpeg, so I have converted from the Nikon NX2 software. Lastly, I purchased an inexpensive mini-hdmi to hdmi cable and plugged it into my large screen HDTV. The 1920 x 1080P/24FPS movie played perfectly and looked like film! Photos also displayed without problems. We were always speaking on the video so we did not notice the lens noise mentioned by others. I am too much of an amateur to comment on the precision and quality. Suffice it to say that it an excellent choice in my opinion to start up using a DSLR and makes an excellent back-up camera for more serious photographers.

 "Died on the 2nd Day--SImilar to 2009 Recall" 2010-10-19
By jessica8762
I loved the camera out of the box. However, it died the second day I had it. Completely lost power, would not turn on at all even with trying to reset and use fresh batteries. Very similar to the 2009 recall that was supposedly fixed (this model was not included in Nikon's recall range.)

I was so heartbroken. Awesome camera if it will work for you.

P.S. Amazon was super about issuing a refund right away--I was very happy with the return process.

I have been using a cheap $200 camera for a long time and can't believe the difference this camera has made. I like to take picture of triathlons and the 4 pictures per second allows me to shoot several photos almost ensuring that I get a great shot. Video is also very good but I haven't worked with it much yet. Now I want a good telephoto to go with it!

 "worst nikon camera" 2010-10-17
By Madmoiselle Nitouche (houston, tx)
I own it - and have owned pretty much every entry/hobbyist dslr Nikon camera since the D50 ... D40, d40x, d60, d80, d90 ....and d5000 --- so, I can say I am a Nikon fan (until now).

Sold my D90 due to error messages with 18-105mm lens - well documented in forums around the net. LOVED the camera HATED the constant error messages.

Bought this d5000 - same sensor same processing... was aware of smaller lower res LCD and lack of top lcd, and of lack of in camera focus motor and weaker battery, lack of DOF and crappy (comparatively) viewfinder.

BUT, where this camera FAILS MISERABLY (again documented on forums) and NIKON is refusing to fix it --- it AUTO-ISO... AUTO ISO is a MAJOR reason I buy Nikon and the Nikon implementation has been around for years -- and it was GREAT.

On the D5000 it does not work if you pop-up the flash. Using AUTO-ISO --Unless your focus is within a short range (1-2 meters) it will RAISE THE ISO to the maximum set in the "auto-iso" settings. In my case, I have it set on 3200iso max with a time of 1/40th/sec so that I don't get shaky pix when shooting without flash...

This leads to indoor, room distance photos WITH flash taken with ISO3200 ... LOUSY LOUSY LOUSY quality compared to the THOUSANDS of pix I have taken with the D90 where they were all taken at 200iso. So, remember, same sensor and yet because of the software implementation of auto-iso in the D5000 you get horrible results.

Yes, you can manually change this EVERY time - but, then the way it worked before was a GREAT GREAT feature and one that Nikon fans loved.

Don't buy the D5000.....

 "outstanding entry level DSLR" 2010-09-24
By manny83
I think this camera is a pretty good bargain for the money. Its an excellent entry level camera for those who have never owned a DSLR. It is pretty user friendly. The picture quality is very impressive and the 11 point AF feature is great compared to the older D40 with 4 AF points. Overall, I am very satisfied with this camera, then again, its a Nikon.

I purchased the QuickPod for use with a Canon S90 which is pretty light. If I were to use it with a camera much heavier, I would be nervous about using it. The detachable camera mount seems pointless and adds unnecessary steps to attaching the camera. For my purposes, the unit is serviceable.

 "It's a joke - don't buy" 2009-12-23
By Eugene Bogorad (Moscow, Russia)
It's marketed as a DSLR pod. In fact it's not strong enough to hold a even reasonably sized flash (e.g. Nikon SB-600), let alone a DSLR (I've got a Nikon D40)! The head creeps, so the only position it's safe to use is all the way down. I tried putting some abrasive paper between the swivel head and its holder. Doesn't help. All in all - a huge disappointment, doesn't even work as a monopod - it's way too slimsy.

Just avoid.

"An alternative to the Quikpod Pro for heavier cameras or longer reach" 2009-08-27
By Jerry Saperstein (Evanston, IL USA)

I hate asking people to take my picture when I am off playing tourist. For most people, "composition" means framing someone smack dab in the middle of the screen. Not exactly the essence of creativity. And all too often they don't hold the camera straight and steady. Oh, the horror!

The Quikpod Pro is an excellent accessory for lightweight point 'n shoot cameras, especially the newer generation with wide-angle lenses. It extends 18.5" Hold it at arm's length and you can get you and a lot of scenery in the picture. And it is a lot easier to carry the Quickpod Pro around than a tripod. I wanted something heftier, though, and decided to give the Quickpod DSLR a try.

Its very big brother, the Quikpod DSLR claims to be able to handle DSLRs and other cameras weighing up to 8 pounds. It collapses to just about the extended length of the Quickpod Pro, about 18", and extends to a mind-blowing 53".

I tried it with a 3+ pound DSLR and the Quickpod DSLR held it at full extension without bending or bowing. However, that weight at the end of a 4.5 foot handheld boom is difficult to manage. Quikpod includes a gel pad that you can use to hold the unit against your abdomen or chest for more control. It comes in handy.

With a lighter weight camera, however, the Quikpod DSLR shines. Take off the zoom lens from your Nikon or Canon and use it with a fixed length lens. Or use it with point 'n shoot that has a rotatable display for some really wow shots, like several feet about your head in a crowd. (The bummer, of course, is that you'll have to use the self-timer unless you have one of the few point 'n shoots that has a remote control.)

You can get high and low viewpoint shots.

The Quikpod DSLR is well engineered and well=made. The sections are held firmly by fiction clips and the camera mount is detachable. The part that attaches to the camera has a non-skid surface which keeps the camera in place, provided that the camera bottom is actually even. I tried it on one Canon Powershot where the designers had engineered a tiny ridge into the bottom for some unknown reason. Not a wise idea when using this unit, though fabricating a shim wouldn't be difficult.

Adding greatly to the versatility of the unit is a replaceable bottom cap. You can screw in one cap that allows attaching a lanyard or use one specifically intended to convert the Quickpod DLR into a monopod. That is a very slick concept and the unit works quite well as a monopod.

There's also a tiny mirror thingie on the head, ostensibly to allow you to more or less frame your image. That part doesn't work all that well, but it is much better than nothing. Be careful, though: the mirrored surface scratches and abrades easily.

In addition the gel reset mentioned above, the kit includes a carrying case, a metal end cap, lanyard and a belt clip that I haven't figured out how to use yet.

The unit is expensive, perhaps more expensive than it might be. But the options for holding a fairly heavily camera far from your body without using a tripod are limited. So it's the Quikpod DSLR or what? Both the Quikpod DSLR and the Quikpod Pro deserve space in your kit. You can always choose which one to take with you on a specific outing based on what you think you'll need, but rest assured: you'll be glad to have one of these units with you any time.

Jerry

"Good if you will really use it" 2009-04-05
By Larry Lifelines (Pomona, NY USA)
I may still find an opportunity to use this device, but it hasn't happened yet. I suggest before you lay out $[...] or so for this, think about how often you'll really use it. I did attach my Nikon DSLR to it, and it does support the weight (using the gear-clamp head, not the friction one). So if you know you'll use it, it works. If not, just another unnecessary expense.
