 "Fantastic Camera" 2010-01-18

It took a minute to get used to having to use the view finder as I've been using the usual digital with LCD screen but after that I realized what I'd been missing for so long... A really good camera!

 "Love it!" 2009-12-28
By Amanda K. Walker
I received this camera out of the blue as a Christmas/Graduation gift. I had just received a Canon Powershot in September and loved that camera, but when I got this one. WOW....JUST WOW.

I absolutely love this camera, and I am so happy I finally own a DLSR. I love being able to have more control over images, holding this camera feels natural, and I like that you can buy accessories and lenses for this versus your regular point and shoot digital cameras. For a first DLSR, I highly recommend this.

The only thing I wish it had was a preview feature like you have on point and shoots (I'm not sure what you'd call that feature but you can see your image through the eyepiece and on the screen before you take it). Otherwise, I love it and am having a fun time taking pictures with it and learning all the other features it has!

 "Love my new camera!" 2009-12-21
By Happy Wife (Tucson, AZ, United States)
I am by no means a professional but when I wanted my first DSLR camera I did a lot of research and ended up making the D40 my choice. My original choice was first the D80, then I changed to the D200, but when my husband thought the prices were too much for a toy, I reevaluated and chose the D40 for it's performance and price. I mainly used [...] as my research site, and he was a great help. I have always used Canon, but when I decided on a DSLR, I wanted Nikon. I don't feel like the transition was too hard- especially since this was my first SLR. It takes a bit of time to learn and patience to get your manual settings right, but when you need a quick fix, the "P"(program) setting works great. For a first time SLR, I think this was a great choice, and the lens that comes with the kit is great.

"Perfect Camera for all situations" 2009-12-21
By DP (Chicago, US)
This camera is just great. If you are not a pro, and you want a high quality, inexpensive camera, then this DSLR is for you.

I bought this camera about 2 months ago. I just love it. It is easy to carry everywhere, and takes great pictures. You do not need a moving screen at the back of the camera. You don't need to take video - as the shutter will open up and allow all the dust get on your sensor!!!!!!!

If you think you need all the buttons of a D300 camera, then you need a D300. Although the d40 menue includes the majority of the features of more expensive camera, these might not be accesible by pushing a button like on D300/D90... but have to go two steps into the menu...

For this reason, I am not going to take any points off... because D40 has its own quality, by keeping it easier to use... and easy to access... and easy to carry around...

Great Product!!! I am using the nikon lenses: 18-55mm, 35mm f/1.8, and 70-300mm.

 "Love my D5000" 2010-01-16

I purchased this camera as a upgrade to my D60. It is every bit as easy to use as the D60 but packs a lot more features. I definitely recommend this camera if a D90 is not in your budget.

 "Outstanding DSLR!" 2010-01-15
By Craig L. Johnson (Vacaville, CA USA)
The camera is super easy to use and is a great DSLR to learn how to take outstanding photos for the novice. I researched entry and mid level DSLR cameras for some time. I narrowed my choices to four cameras; Canon XSi, T1i, Nikon D90 and D5000. I bought the Canon XSi first and took it back because indoor photos were a little lacking. Also, the camera had limited user friendly features. After much deliberating and perusing through reviews I decided to buy the Nikon D5000. Right away I was able to produce better pictures than with the Canon XSi. The Nikon does much better in low light and the pictures had better sharpness and color. In addition, the Nikon D5000 has great auto modes (19 modes, I think) which are extremely useful for the novice that just wants to take great photos without the expertise. Also, the swivel screen is very handy at capturing shots at odd angles. I chose the D5000 over the Canon T1i because it's basically the same as the XSi concerning picture quality. I chose the D5000 over the D90 because of price, user friendly features, swivel screen, and the fact that both cameras use the same sensor (equal picture quality). The D90 has a much better selection of available lenses since the D5000 does not have auto focusing in the camera body. However, the D5000 will use all the lenses in the Nikon family but will only auto focus with AF-S lenses. This is not a big problem for me because I don't plan to buy many lenses. The D5000 I purchased came with the 18-55 and 55-200 VR AF-S kit lenses--both very good. I also purchased the AF-S 35mm F/1.8 prime lens (which is outstanding). I will likely buy one or two more lenses. Note; AF-S lenses are newer lenses, Nikon is adding more all the time. So, the lens issue is a minor one for me. There are also some limitations regarding flash options as compared to the D90, again not a big deal for me. I will not be setting up a studio with the need for off camera flash (master and slave) options. Overall, the D5000 is an awesome camera. I'm amazed at the pictures I've already been able to capture. I really love this camera, no regrets!

"Everything I wanted and more..." 2010-01-13
By A. Boston (Boston, MA United States)
In my teens and early 20's, I had an Nikon SLR that was practically attached to me, I took it everywhere. I pondered going to college for photography, so it was a serious hobby for me that I've been missing since the advent of digital photography. I've had a variety of great point and shoots, but they never gave me the control of my old Nikon.

I did a lot of reading up on the various models and found an easy to read comparison chart on the Nikon site. While I was drawn to the D90, I found the D5000 was very nearly the same thing, for at least five hundred dollars less. The only difference that stood out to me was the D90 had 4.5 frames-per-second, D5000 had 4 frames-per-second. The D500 has the awesome vari-angle LCD screen and I knew I'd get some great use out of that. The downside was it wouldn't auto-focus with my old lenses(I believe because there is no built in AF motor in the body of the D5000), but that wasn't a huge deal breaker for me, being I usually like to manually focus anyway.

I got the D500 as a surprise for Christmas(you know how sometimes you put ridiculous things you know no one will buy on your Amazon wish list?!)and haven't put it down since. And the super awesome part? You can take as many pictures as you want and you don't have to develop film. Plus, there's the added bonus of being able to manipulate your digital images in a photo program, which I was never able to do with my 35mm camera.

All my old lenses(sigma, etc) work wonderfully, but the lens it came with is multi-purpose and easy to use. I'm a big fan of macro and found I could get quite close with the standard lens(18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR Lens) that came on the D5000. The camera has bells and whistles galore, but out of the box, it's easy to figure out and begin. The more you use it, the more you figure out what you like, and all the cool things you can do with it.

I do love the settings such as beach/snow, pet portrait, dusk/dawn and candlelight, though I'll mostly stick with manual mode. But those setting are perfect for the moments you just need to get the shot and don't have time to fiddle around.

The pop up flash works well, though I hope to get a speedlight eventually. The vari-angle LCD is shockingly cool. I'd never know I needed one if it wasn't offered, but once you get used to it, you'd never be able to live without it.

Some interesting, diverse options for in-camera editing, like adding fish eye after you've taken the photo! When I was younger my fish eye lens was one of my favorites, now it's almost an unnecessary lens to lug around. Otherwise, I like to do most of my work on a larger screen, and so far have been loving the Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo x2 Ultimate. I really get into photo restoration and also just doing fun color/hue/contrast manipulations of my digital images. That software is very easy to learn and gets the job done.

Overall, there's nothing I've found about this camera that I don't like!! I'd get the same model again in a heartbeat.

 "Nice camera, mediocre lens" 2010-01-05
By Real America X (New Jersey)
I purchased this camera a little over a month ago as my first DSLR; previously I have used manual film SLR cameras, and I wanted a digital camera that gave me the same kind of control as the film SLRs. The camera itself is nice and takes excellent images. The interface could be faster; in a fast moving situation I often don't have the time to navigate through the menu to select the precise ISO or white balance setting I'd like to use, but this is a minor quibble. Some of the preset "scene" settings are better than others; the snow setting produced excellent pictures with excellent, well saturated color during a recent blizzard, but the portrait settings often leave the subject looking greenish. I can get around this using the auto or manual setting, however.

My major gripe about the camera is the lens kit; at about 45-55mm zoom, the smallest aperture setting goes all the way up to 5.2, which sometimes makes it difficult to create a soft, out of focus background for a tightly framed subject in the foreground. I've also noticed significant barrel distortion at the higher end of the zoom range, again 45-55 mm.
